The Endurance Course

Wednesday was my platoon's introduction to the Endurance Course. I was a little nervous about running it because the E-course at OCS was one of my biggest challenges. The TBS E-course is like the OCS E-course on steroids. It's nearly twice as long and includes rock climbing. I was the last in my platoon to finish Wednesday. I am determined to never let that happen again. So, Saturday a group from my platoon took on the course again. I did so much better. I plan to run this every weekend until we run it for time in January.

About 2 miles into the run.

Won't this be fun in January?

The wall.

One of half a dozen ropes. Mile three.

More ropes.

Success! I ran the 4.5 mile course in about 65 minutes. We did not run the Obstacle Course before starting the event, nor did we go through the water obstacles. I figure that will add ten to fifteen minutes to my time just by factoring in that they will wear me out. Females have 70 minutes to get max score on the course and 90 minutes to pass the course. Males have 60 minutes max and 80 minutes to pass.

Dining with the President

Yesterday, my Staff Platoon Commander (SPC) asked for 12 volunteers to clean toilets. I volunteered because I have a talent for cleaning commodes and because I didn't want to sit in the barracks for an hour doing nothing. My SPC had the volunteers follow him into his office to give us the lowdown on the project and told us that we were not going to be cleaning toilets, but actually going to eat lunch with President Bush! This news also explained why there were men in suits walking all over the roofs on base (not normal).

At ten o'clock this morning about 250-300 Lieutenants and Marines of various ranks formed up outside our chow hall. We went through security and settled into our seats at a table. The chow hall was highly decorated and completely rearranged. We waited about an hour before we were told to get in line. When we went through the chow line, we had actual silverware and China plates. The food was excellent!

We sat down and started eating. Soon, Attention on Deck was called and we all stood as the President and his staff entered the room. It was almost surreal. It was like almost like I knew these people because I have seen them all over the media for so many years. Incoming White House Press Secretary Dana Perino sat at my table. She is really down to earth and shared some interesting stories about the President.

Ms. Perino told us that after a big event like the President's speech last night, the staff is exhausted and just wants a day off. The media, however, is always looking for something and will follow the President wherever he goes, so he chooses to do something uplifting after big events. Hence. The Basic School.

President Bush began speaking as we finished up chow and spoke about the significance of the war and how we will stay in Iraq as long as he believes the war is winnable. He shared that this is a fight about democracy and responsibility. He said the US has the responsibility to stop the murder of innocent people.

After his speech, we were allowed to ask the President questions. One Lieutenant asked him who is the most interesting person he has met while in the White House. President Bush answered that it is the Prime Minister of Japan. One reason is because the Prime Minister is an Elvis fan. The President took him to Graceland and the Prime Minister sang Elvis songs while there. Then he noted that 60 years ago, George H.W.Bush was in a Navy fighter jet trying to shoot down the Japanese as they were our sworn enemy. Now Japan is one of our greatest allies.
The President encouraged us about Iraq. He said is knows he is idealistic, but he truly wants Iraq to be free. He said it won't be easy and it won't happen as quickly as we want it to. He also mentioned that it took the United States nearly 100 years to realize that all of our citizens should be free and the Abraham Lincoln didn't check the polls to see if abolishing slavery was the popular thing to do, he knew it was the right thing to do.

It was a very encouraging day and I found renewed faith in our President. He seems to be genuine and definitely sticks with his ideals no matter what others say.

Nissan Altima

Aaron and I have been planning for the replacement of our '92 Buick Century for some time and decided that now was the time to purchase a new (to us) car. Welcome Ali the Nissan Altima (2005).

She has a 3.5 liter engine, five speed transmission, and a moon roof. We got an excellent deal too.

That's Aaron all jealous in the Pathfinder.

And our apartment building...

Short Hair

After having all sorts of weird sores showing up after 10 weeks of Officer Candidate School and the annoyance of putting my hair in a bun every day, I finally cut my hair! Actually, I was growing it out to donate to Locks of Love and finally had the 10 inches to do it.

Here are the pictures:

Commissioning Ceremony

Aaron and I were commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in the United States Marine Corps August 10, 2007. No matter how difficult the training or whatever may come, I must never forget why I am here.

''I, (state your full name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.''

Aaron posted videos of our pinning on his blog.

Graduation

Somehow, someway, I graduated from Officer Candidate School and am now a United States Marine Corps Officer. This was definitely some tough training. I still can't believe I made it through. My platoon started with 77 candidates and 50 graduated.

The next step is The Basic School. OCS was just an evaluation. The Basic School will actually teach us how to be Marines. Aaron and I officially moved to Virginia last week and have started in-processing with our company. The Basic School is 6 months long and the schedule is packed. I will be in Fox company, which unfortunately is known as "Frozen Fox" as we will be outside during the majority of the winter. Good times to come...

Yup, not much in changes except that I gained some weight. At least it's muscle. I wish I had measured my thighs before leaving for OCS. They are huge!
